Sensory Play Ideas for the School Holidays

Sensory play is a valuable learning experience for children as it provides them with opportunities to explore their world using their senses.

Here are some sensory play ideas you can try at home these school holidays:

  1. Sensory bins: Fill a large container with a sensory material, such as rice, beans, or sand. Add in some small toys or objects for your child to explore and play with.

  2. Playdough: Make your own playdough or buy some at a store. Offer your child different tools to manipulate and shape the playdough, such as cookie cutters, rolling pins, or plastic knives.

  3. Water play: Fill a container with water and offer your child cups, spoons, and play accessories. You can also add food colouring or bubbles to make it more fun.

  4. Sensory bottles: Fill a clear plastic bottle with a sensory material, such as glitter, water, or beads. Seal the bottle tightly and let your child shake and explore.

  5. Texture scavenger hunt: Hide different textured objects around the house or yard and have your child find them. You can use objects such as cotton balls, sandpaper, or pom-poms.

  6. Ice play: Freeze small toys or objects in an ice cube tray and let your child explore as the ice melts. You can also add food colouring or glitter to the water before freezing.

  7. Shaving cream: Spread shaving cream on a table or tray and let your child play and explore. You can add food colouring or scents to make it more fun.

  8. Sensory balloons: Fill balloons with different sensory materials, such as rice, flour, or sand. Tie them off and let your child play and explore.

Remember to always supervise your child during sensory play activities and make sure to choose materials that are age-appropriate and safe for your child.
