About the Artist – Uncle John Smith Gumbula

Uncle John Smith Gumbula is a highly respected Wakka Wakka | Gurang Gurang man with Gamilaroi and Iman family lineage, and an adopted son of the Yolŋu people of Galiwin’ku (Elcho Island). His creative journey began at the age of ten and has evolved into more than four decades of cultural leadership, arts practice, and cross-cultural advocacy.

Internationally recognised for his work in building cultural bridges, Uncle John’s art reflects deep ancestral knowledge, lived experience, and strong spiritual connection to Country. His philosophy centres on inspiring others through cultural empowerment, shared learning, and storytelling that strengthens identity and community. His work continues to honour Country while creating pathways for future generations to connect with First Nations culture.
