Uncle John Smith Gumbula is a respected Wakka Wakka | Gurang Gurang man with Gamilaroi and Iman lineage, and an adopted son of the Yolŋu people of Galiwin’ku (Elcho Island). His artistic journey began at age ten and has grown into more than four decades of cultural leadership, creative expression, and advocacy. His work honours ancestral knowledge, celebrates cultural identity, and builds bridges of understanding across communities in Australia and internationally.

A renowned artist, educator, and Cultural Ambassador, Uncle John brings deep cultural wisdom, lived experience, and spiritual connection to Country into every artwork he creates.
